For this exercise, I am going to look through my entire photography archive and try to find 4 contrasting pairs.

It seems quite straight forward:

Black

Barcelona Black

White

Milky White

Black and White is fairly obvious. A full frame white against a full frame black.

Many

Canned

Few

Trinity 200

Many and Few means a lot of cans, against a few candles.

Long

From Lincolnshire to Yorkshire

Short

Daisy

Long and Short means a long undershot of a bridge and a small daisy.

High

High

Low

Self Portrait in the House of Bones

A high shot and a low shot.

Looking through these shots, they are all fairly obvious. I think it’s easy to get sidetracked into just selecting the shots that match the brief without any real thought.

In the “high” and “low” shots however, both images are less about the subject, more about the viewpoint.

Similarly in the “long” shot, the composition gives a feeling of great length. Whereas, the “short” daisy could in fact be any size – there’s no real sign of “shortness”.

I think I need to consider how I can best utilise form, viewpoint and depth of perspective to get my message across. For example, in long and short, I could use the same subject but shoot one with a long focal length, the other a short.

I also need to think about how the lighting and the shadows can also demonstrate the difference between the pairs.
