For this first project, we are looking at how different focal lengths affect your angle of view.

The brief was to take 3 separate shots of the same scene at 3 different focal lengths. I shot this project in my lunch hour on the Westwood in Beverley.

The first shot was to be at your camera’s “standard” focal length. To work this out, I needed to set up the shot on a tripod, and keeping both eyes open, adjust the zoom until the view through the viewfinder and the view with my other eye appeared equal.

This proved to be quite difficult physically to do. I managed to do it by setting the camera on its side for a portrait shot.

The focal length which appeared most equal to me was at 60mm. (I shot in fully manual mode at the same f-stop for all 3 shots).

Once I’d done the first shot, the brief was to shoot two further shots, one at the lens’ widest view (28mm), the other at its furthest telephoto setting (135mm).
