Project 4 : Shutter speeds
For this project the idea was to mount the camera on a tripod, and take shots of a moving object at different shutter speeds with the camera fixed.
I took this on my lunchbreak at work after convincing my workmate John to help out.
I set the camera to shutter priority (Tv) and took several shots at different shutter speeds. It was an overcast day so I used ISO 400, but after taking the fastest three shots, I needed to adust the ISO to a less sensitive setting (100) so that I could take a longer shot.
Fixed at 1/320sec
30mm. F/3.5 1/320sec ISO 400
Shot 1. Everything is sharp. You cannot tell the bicycle is moving and even the spokes of the wheel are in focus.
Fixed at 1/20sec
30mm. F/13 1/20sec ISO 400
Shot 2. The bicycle is blurred but you can still make out it’s a cyclist. It conveys just the right amount of motion.
Fixed at 1/8sec
30mm. F/22 1/8sec ISO 400
Shot 3. In this shot, the cyclist is just a blur, If anything it looks like the bicycle is travelling faster than it actually was.
For this particular set of shots, I prefer shot 2, where the blur is enough to convey the feeling of motion, but the image is clear enough to be able to recognise the form of a cyclist.
